It is easy to find advice on what Leaders should DO: more important is how they must BE.
From a good State of Mind [we call this Clarity], you can be innovative, resourceful, resilient and instinctively strategic. In a bad State of Mind, you risk wrong decisions, poor outcomes and relationship challenges.
A study of performance in 740 leaders* clearly demonstrated both the importance of Clarity and how much of the time leaders are not in this state.
The diagram shows the range of percentage time spent in each of 6 State of Mind Zones and that performance is much higher in the Good States of Mind [Clarity]. So eg Leaders spend between 10 and 28% of their time ‘frustrated or angry’, with correspondingly less than ideal outcomes.
What is the bottom line?
There are two take home messages: first that working from a foundation of Clarity is the basic enabler of good Leadership; second that whatever other tools you may have at your disposal, if your Clarity tank is empty performance will suffer.
